Hestia is the virgin goddess of the home and hearth. She lost her place as an Olympian when Dionysus came along. She did it willingly because she was usually out of her throne, tending the fires of Olympus!

The Romans assigned Hestia (Vesta) and her priestesses (the Vestal Virgins) the task of protecting their empire's sacred fireplaces. Vestal Virgins were called to duty between the ages of six and ten, then served for 30 years. They could marry after those thirty years, but it was considered unlucky if one did so. If a Vestal Virgin went on a secret date and was caught, she was buried alive.
