Ganesh is the god of obstacles and their removal. He is also the god of science and the arts, and wisdom in general. He is the son of Parvati (an aspect of Devi) and Shiva.

As you can see in the picture, Ganesh has an unwieldy elephant head and rides on a mouse (not shown; obtained from a demon). There's a short story about how he got his head.

Ganesh grew up not knowing his father, Shiva. He ended up as a gatekeeper for his mother, Parvati. One day, his father wished to enter the gate he stood by. Ganesh refused, not knowing Shiva. The latter promptly cut off the former's head; however, since Ganesh was a god, he was still alive. Shiva announced that the head of the next animal to pass by would replace his son's head. This animal was an elephant.
