How the Pelican Discovered Fire and Opal

Some Australian Aboriginal tribes revere the pelican, Muda, as a creator. After you read this myth, it will be quite easy to see why.

Muda was flying over the desert one day when he came to a place where the ground shone like a rainbow. He found that the ground was littered with pebbles of an iridescent gemstone, which he called opal. Then he struck his beak on one of the pebbles, and it sparked and created fire!
